My name is Sid Savara.

Was It Always Like This? No Way

I’m fortunate to be where I am today, but it didn’t start this way.  There are many desires I had in my life that I fell short of over and over.

My body wasn’t the way I wished it was.

I felt like I had no direction in my career, and like I was just going through the motions so I could pay the bills.

I was even more frustrated that on top of all that, I hadn’t been able to make time with friends and family a priority.

I remember feeling like I had just settled, and that I was watching life pass me by.

I knew deep down that health, professional success, family – all these things mattered to me, and I knew I was better than this.

And yet…over and over I would fall into this trap of wanting something – but not actually making it happen.

I started to think that I should just accept that this was just the way it had to be: and I just wasn’t going to get what I wanted.

But I didn’t accept it – and I realized what I was doing wrong.

I realized…I was actually trying too hard.

I had fallen into the trap of trying to “force myself” to be successful.

I had been trying make it on sheer willpower and determination alone, trying to “will” myself to success.

I had all these pieces from books I had read, seminars I had attended – and I was trying to force my life into someone else’s vision of success.

    Success Secret #1: You Can’t Force Yourself To Be Successful

    To be successful, I realized I couldn’t “force myself” to do things.
    I had to figure out a way to get myself to WANT to do things, and actually have that internal motivation drive me.
    The reason is: willpower is limited, according to recent groundbreaking research that I discovered from psychologist Dr. Roy Baumeister at Florida State University.
    Picture this: I show you a plate of the cookies and a bowl of radishes. I tell you, eat only radishes: don't touch the cookies. I tell someone else, help yourself to the cookies - you don't need to use willpower to stop yourself. Now imagine I give you and this other person a difficult puzzle. Do you think the "cookie avoiding" would matter? You bet it does. Dr. Baumeister did this exact experiment: and the cookie eaters literally spent 200% as much time on the puzzle as those who had to fight off the cookie urge. Their willpower was depleted: and this is shown in study after study.
    What does this mean to you? I'll tell you how it applied to me:
    If I worked really hard in the morning to "force" myself to work on some of my goals, then I’d often get burnt out in the afternoon. I had burned all my daily willpower - and my "willpower fatigue" (that's what it's called) would result in low productivity until I had a chance to recharge.

    Success Secret #2: Saying “Just Do It” Isn’t Enough

    “Just do it” is great advice if what’s stopping you is one small step – like making one phone call, or signing up for a gym membership.
    But why does that gym membership go unused?
    It’s because saying “just do it” simply isn’t enough.
    “Just do it” sounds like great advice, because sure that’s what’s holding you back – you’re not “doing” what needs to be done.
    But the fact is…if that advice worked, you wouldn’t be reading this in the first place. That advice is limited: it only works for very short term tasks and goals. For longer term goals, for your dreams, for the things that truly make you happy in life – it takes more than a small flash of motivation.

    Success Secret #3: You Can't See Your Own Blind Spots

    When I played volleyball, I remember jealously watching other people spike harder, faster, and jump higher than me – even though I was just as athletic as them.
    So I worked harder and harder at it.
    I tried to focus harder, I tried to increase my "vertical leap"
    I went to the gym to work on my strength and tried to swing harder.
    No matter what I did though, I hardly got any results…
    Until one day, my coach said something to me:
    “Sid, the problem is not in your swing or how you jump. Your problem starts way before that: you start your run up with the wrong foot.”
    He showed me that by stepping forward with the wrong foot, I was setting in motion the WRONG chain of events. By the time I got close to the net, my balance, positioning and swinging motion were all wrong.
    They key…and this is important…is that even though swinging your arm to hit the ball is the most visible portion of the spiking motion – the positioning of your feet is actually what makes the biggest difference in how hard you can spike the ball.
    I applied the correct technique – I stepped forward with the correct foot – and as a result I was spiking harder than ever before.

    TRANSFORMATION. First, to accomplish anything in your life – you have to internally change as a person to be the type of person who can achieve what you desire.

    For me, that meant no more being unsure of myself, and no more being someone who was easily distracted and jumping from one thing to another.
    I had to become the type of person who actually did what I said I would do.
    I had to learn how to be the person I knew I could be: regardless of what was going on outside of me.

    VISION. Second, you need clarity on what you want.

    Too often, we "kind of" want to do something. We have a vague idea that we want to "get healthy" or "eat better" or "travel someday."
    That's not clarity. Those vague ideas in some ways are worse than having NO dreams at all - because internally it causes you to have disappointment and frustration.
    How can you satisfy yourself...if you aren't even sure what that satisfaction would look like?
    I realized I had to get clarity on what I wanted and where I was going in my life.
    I had been too vague for too long. Without clearly knowing what I wanted, I never really knew what I was doing and why - or how effective it really was.
    I had to learn how to be clear on what I wanted, so I could focus on what really mattered to me, and the results I wanted to get in my life.

    CONVICTION. Third, you have to be able to weigh options and move quickly.

    Total failure - that is, trying something and having it fail spectacularly - kills hardly any dreams
    The real killer of success a lack of conviction, which leads to second guessing and hesitation. This leads or procrastination...and slowly letting your life pass you by.
    I needed to have a clear way to be crystal clear on what was most important, when the inevitable tough decisions and trade offs came.
    I needed to be able to quickly understand my own life situation, have the total picture of what I wanted to do – so that I wouldn’t be stuck analyzing options or wondering if I was doing the wrong things.

    PRIORITIZATION. Fourth, you’ve got to take ownership and responsibility for how you are spending your time.

    I needed to take control of my calendar.
    I had to live my life on my time- not somebody else’s.
    I had to stop reacting to what was going on, whether it was email, or random social media posts, or just wasting my time on things that didn’t matter.
    I had to learn how to be in control of my time and my life.

    OPTIMIZATION. And then finally, you have to always make space for what matters – by removing what holds you back

    I had to optimize my life by getting rid of the negative things that were holding me back.
    I had to be honest with myself and realize what was truly important in my life, and to let go of things that didn’t fit with my new life.
